Ancient and modern buildings enter 2022 York Design Awards

Some of York’s oldest and newest buildings have entered this year’s York Design Awards.

Judging took place this week with four leading architects touring the city to visit each award entry.  The 13th century Clifford’s Tower and 15th century Guildhall are among the entries, which also include a number of private houses, the new Hudson Quarter mixed-use development, the redevelopment of the Old Fire Station and York Bridge Club.

Head judge Andy Davey from Simpson & Brown architects said: “It was an absolute pleasure to judge this year’s awards.  The entries were so diverse and truly demonstrated how good design leads to positive outcomes and impacts for people and the planet.”

Andy was joined by fellow judges, sustainability architect Professor Brian Edwards from the University of Edinburgh, former conservation architect for City of York Council Janine Riley and Nicky Watson, a Director of award-winning JDDK Architects in Newcastle.

All the entries will go on display at the York Explore Library from 11th to 18th June to allow members of the public to vote for their favourite scheme, in the People’s Choice Award sponsored by the York Press. There is also a Young People’s Award, where under 18s can select their winning entry.

The winners of all eight categories including the Lord Mayor’s Award and Sustainability Award will be announced at the presentation evening on Monday 4th July at the Yorkshire Museum.

Ann Reid, Chair of the York Design Awards committee said: “This year’s awards show that, despite the recent pandemic, the property and construction sector has continued to design, renovate, refurbish and develop some outstanding buildings that inspire and delight residents and visitors to York.”
